Tree Health and Care

The best thing we can do for our trees is keep them healthy. We wouldn't think of driving our car more than 5000 miles before having a mechanic change the oil, but we'll wait until our trees fall down to have anyone look at them. Call me and I can honestly assess every tree on your property and tell you if they need anything and what that will cost in writing.

Tree Disease Prevention

Again, the best thing we can do is keep our trees healthy. Usually that care is called crown cleaning. Properly pruning out dead, dying, diseased, damaged, crossing and rubbing branches. It's also important to inspect and improve structure. Bark included crotches and stem girdling roots are killers. We can also buy a good tree and plant it properly in the right place. Don't plant a full size oak tree under a power line.

Tree Disease Treatment

The first thing I have to do is identify my patient. I then will know what diseases to look for and what we can effectively treat. Treatment without diagnosis is malpractice! Some diseases can be effectively treated like Rhizosphaera needlecast. Others like dutch elm disease can only be treated before the tree gets infected.

Tree Removal

Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help decide whether a tree should be removed. Ames Story has the the skills, knowledge, insurance and equipment to safely and efficiently remove trees. Removal is recommended when the tree:
  • is dead or dying
  • is considered irreparably hazardous
  • is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning
  • is crowding and causing harm to other trees
  • is to be replaced by a more suitable specimen
  • is located in an area where new construction requires removal

Other Services

Ames Story Tree also provide a variety of other tree care services, including:
  • Plant Health Care, a concept of preventive maintenance to keep trees in good health, which will help the tree better defend itself against insects, disease, and site problems.
  • Fertilization
  • Cabling or bracing for added support to branches with weak attachment
  • Aeration to improve root growth
  • Installation of lightning protection systems
  • Spraying or injecting to control certain insect and disease problems
